Diane Haddon
I reside in a small cottage surrounded by majestic cedars in a rural community across the water from Seattle. Just a few steps outside the back door is one of my very favorite places in the whole world… my studio. There is a transformation that takes place whenever I enter this magical, creative space. I can’t really explain it. I just go with it.
Becoming an artist has been a life-long journey… I’ve always loved to creatively express my ideas, but never seemed to have enough time. Then I landed in northern New Mexico in a little spot in the road called Abiquiu. This was the place where I finally allowed myself to bloom and to actually call myself an “artist”. My main forms of expression were large colored pencil & graphite drawings and block printing. I was able to explore my art full-time for several years interspersed with “real jobs”. The years I spent in New Mexico were life-changing. I miss the amazing friends and the expansive, austere landscape but, after 12 years in this magical place, it was time to head “home” to the pacific northwest and my family.
I try to follow my artistic path intuitively. When I started creating in my new studio, fresh forms of expression emerged. As a hunter and gatherer of unusual, worn, and much-loved objects, I realized I had all the ingredients needed to start down the path of assemblage art. Utilizing my collection of vintage photos and ephemera I also started composing collage pieces with mixed media and found objects. Most recently I’ve started making “tiny assemblages” to create pendants and pins.
I am blessed to be doing exactly what makes me happy and to be surrounded by supportive and creative friends and family. I love what I do.
